Brave New Media LA partnered with the Hawaii Executive Office on Aging (EOA) to create a powerful digital tool designed to empower individuals and families facing Alzheimer’s and dementia. The project, which included the hawaiidementia.org and related Aging & Disability Resource Center (ADRC) sites for each Hawaiian island, focused on web design as a lifeline, providing easy access to critical resources and building a supportive online community.
BNMLA’s web development was rooted in a data-driven, user-centric philosophy. A rigorous Discovery & Planning phase ensured the sites were meticulously tailored to the specific needs of Hawaii’s aging population and their caregivers. This empathetic design approach created a digital space that is easy to navigate for those who may be experiencing cognitive challenges or high levels of stress.
The sites were built with a commitment to accessibility (WCAG compliance) and responsive design, ensuring a consistent user experience on all devices. Utilizing the user-friendly WordPress CMS, BNMLA empowered EOA staff to easily manage and update content, keeping the information current and reliable.
BNMLA’s UI/UX capabilities provided tangible support by organizing information intuitively. Users can easily find essential resources such as practical caretaker guides, educational content on brain health and early detection, and community connection through event calendars and Q&A sections. The visual design, led by Web Director Amber Sjomeling, went beyond aesthetics to build a sense of trust and support through authentic and engaging visuals.
In conclusion, BNMLA’s work with the EOA is a powerful example of how purposeful web development and empathetic design can serve a vital mission, delivering a digital solution that truly empowers and supports the community.
